The story of the movie starts with Barfi (name of an Indian Sweet), who is a deaf and mute boy and is mostly chased by police inspector Dutta. Barfi enters the life of Shruti Ghosh and develops a special bond with her. Unfortunately, due to his disabilities and lack of money, Shruti marries someone else as his mother wanted. Barfi is heartbroken but decides to move on but suddenly gets the news of his father?s illness.
At the same time, he comes to know about the kidnap of his childhood friend Jhilmil Chatterjee (who is also mentally disabled). Barfi founds her and asks for money from Jhilmil?s rich father. During this period, they both stay at Barfi?s apartment and develop a special bond. After getting money from her dad, Barfi Pays the bill of the hospital but still can?t save his dad. Anyhow Jhilmil refuges to go back, and they both leave the city hiding from the inspector. Time takes a lap, and Barfi again meets Shruti, but this time he is in love with Jhilmil, whereas Shruti wants him back, and suddenly they again lose Jhilmil, which gives Shruti another hope to get Barfi back. So, what happened next is what this movie is about.
