MP3 is a compressed audio file format that became popular in late 1990s. MP3 files are about one tenth size of the original file size but the sound quality is maintained somewhat similar to that of the original file. Because of their small size and fidelity they have become very much popular to store music files.

Ripping can be defined as the conversion of a music CD to the MP3 format (or other audio format). Ripping can also be called as Importing.

MP3s can be ripped ranging from 8kbps to 320kbps.Although, 128kbps is considered to be norm for MP3 files. Sound quality and file size increases with the increase in bit rate.

History

A German company named Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft started a research program to decode music in low bit rate and high quality at its institute. Harlheinz Bradenburg, a student of the same university was asked to work on this project. After the completion of this project he applied for German patent in 1989.

In 1997, Fraunhofer’s mp3 became a disaster, then, Tomislav Uzelac, an employee of Advanced Multimedia Products Company, made the first successful MP3 player.
