Nusrat Jahan

Mamata Banerjee, the current Chief Minister of West Bengal and the President of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stated in 2019 that Nusrat Jahan would compete for the 2019 Lok Sabha election from West Bengal, and she has been active in her political activities since then. She fought for the West Bengal assembly constituency of Basirhat and defeated her opponent, BJP candidate Sayantan Basu, by a margin of 3 lakh and 50 thousand votes.

Personal Life and Controversies

For a long time, Nusrat’s life appears to be surrounded by controversies.

Marriage Rumours with Victor Ghosh

Nusrat was first alleged to be engaged to Victor Ghosh, a businessman from Jamshedpur, for about 5 years. Although she refuted all speculations about her marriage to Victor, she was said to be in a live-in partnership with him.

Victim of nasty political tactics

In the 2016 assembly polls, Jahan was the TMC’s top campaigner. Following her candidacy was announced in 2017, a BJP IT Unit member was detained for creating and disseminating an offensive cartoon of her.

Involved in saving her rape-accused boyfriend

In September 2016, Kadir Khan, her former boyfriend, was detained in the Park Street gang rape case 4 years after the crime. Nusrat was expected to marry him during this period. During the inquiry, it was alleged that Nusrat was suspected of assisting Kader in fleeing and protecting him. Nusrat, on the other hand, had dismissed all of the claims leveled against her.

Accused of being a drug addict

Nusrat was absent from her first day of the Winter Session Parliament in 2019. She was supposed ‘ill’ and had been admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata. There are different versions of the event if rumors are to be believed. First, she was afflicted with respiratory sickness as a result of her asthma. Next, she was the sufferer of a “drug overdose.” According to a media report, Jahan developed drug reactions after taking sleeping medications.

Constant scrutiny by the media

She was again scrutinized by the media when she arrived from Turkey after her marriage in 2019 and appeared in Parliament wearing bangles, sindoor, and a sari.

Criticism over religious bigotry

During the same period, there had been a lot of discussion concerning her marital status’ legitimacy and sacredness. The Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid stated her marriage with Nikhil Jain appeared to be more of a display and that she had committed a major sin that she should not have committed. In response, Jahan ended the debate by posting that she symbolizes an inclusive India that is free of caste, creed, and religious restrictions.

Muslim clergy slammed Jahan for playing ‘dhak’ and offering prayers during Durga Puja festivities in October 2020. They even proclaimed her acts to be Haraam.

She has often been the target of numerous nasty and misogynistic assaults on social media platforms.

Lost her cool while campaigning for TMC

During the West Bengal state elections in 2021, footage of TMC MP Nusrat losing her temper while campaigning at an election rally went viral. Because Nusrat was TMC’s celebrity campaigner in the poll, the BJP seized the opportunity to criticize her over the video in which she could be seen becoming enraged when her vehicle fell stranded in a swarm. The BJP uploaded the video of furious Nusrat getting out of the open Jeep and declining to carry on the rally up to the main road, as requested by a party member. In the video, she was heard saying that she had been campaigning for more than an hour. She doesn’t do this even for the CM.

The Nusrat and Nikhil debacle

Her romance-cum brief marriage set up with Nikhil Jain has been marred by controversies, which have constantly kept her in the spotlight.

Nusrat met Nikhil Jain, a textile entrepreneur when she advertised for his company in 2018. While courting, the couple posted plenty of photos with loving messages. They later revealed their relationship and married in the gorgeous surroundings of Bodrum, Turkey. The pair held a big reception on the 4th of July, 2019, at a 5-star hotel in Kolkata, which was graced by big names from the Bengali Cinema Industry and Bengal’s political community, including West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

There were speculations that she had been having a romantic relationship with her co-actor Yash Dasgupta since January 2021. There were rumours that Nusrat’s spouse, Nikhil Jain, had sent her a separation notice in February 2021. Nusrat, on the other hand, stated that she had never gotten any notice.

Things took another unexpected turn in Nusrat and Nikhil’s estranged relationship status when the news of Nusrat being 6 months pregnant broke out in public by media while there were rumours floating around at the same time that their marriage was in shambles. However, when asked about Nusrat’s pregnancy news, Nikhil stated that their marital relationship had broken down and that the two had not been together for almost six months; hence he cannot be the father of the child. He further revealed that he has had no touch with Nusrat.

Furthermore, following two of Nusrat’s films being released in February 2021, Yash and Nusrat celebrated New Year’s Eve in Rajasthan together; also, the two were seen together multiple times.

The news of Nusrat’s pregnancy and separation from Nikhil Jain spread like wildfire. And to add more fuel to the dramatic turn of events, Nusrat came out with a statement saying that her ‘marriage’ with businessman Nikhil Jain was “not a marriage” but rather “a live-in relationship”.

Jain subsequently went to court and filed a lawsuit to have their marriage annulled and the divorce legalized. Nusrat, on the other hand, cast a pall over all the debate about her marital status with her declaration that she was never married in the first place. She claimed that their marriage took place in a foreign country and that for an interfaith marriage to be recognized in India, it must be validated under the Special Marriage Act, which in her case was not done. Therefore, Nikhil and her marriage was not legally valid under Indian law.

Later, Jain, in his defence, stated that they were living together as husband and wife and that they had introduced themselves to the public as a married couple. He said that Nusrat ignored his continued attempts to have the marriage recorded and left his home in November 2020 with her stuff.

Further, after their divorce, Nusrat alleged Jain of defrauding her finances. However, Jain disputed the accusations, calling them “meritless, insulting, and false.”

The Political turmoil afterward

Nusrat’s response about the legality of her marriage with Nikhil and her assertion that it was nothing more than a live-in relationship sparked debate and was used as a political weapon to encircle TMC.

Amit Malviya, the BJP’s IT Cell head, queried if Jahan misled Parliament about her marriage to Nikhil Jain. He challenged the validity of Nusrat’s Parliamentary record, which showed that she was married. Nusrat also swore her oath as a member of Parliament under the name Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain. She was also listed as “married” on the Parliament’s webpage, with the 19th of June, 2019, as her wedding date and Nikhil Jain being her husband.

Following Malviya, BJP MP Sanghamitra Maurya expressed concerns in a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, stating that Nusrat’s oath for Lok Sabha membership is non-existent in terms of law since she wasn’t actually married.

The West Bengal BJP president, Dilip Ghosh, re-ignited the issue by asserting that she should be expelled from the TMC or quit as an MP since she had embarrassed Indian culture by wearing vermillion and then refusing her relationship. The Trinamool Congress, although, dismissed the comments and refused to talk about the situation, claiming that it was Nusrat’s personal business. One veteran TMC figure, however, claimed that the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, was displeased with Jahan’s outright denial of the marriage, and her controversy had shown Banerjee and the party in poor light.

Awards Received

For ‘Jamai 420,’ she got the ‘Star Jalsha Parivaar Award’ for ‘Best Jodi’ alongside Ankush Hazra. In 2017, she was also awarded the ‘Tele Cine Award for Best Actress’.

Current Status

Nusrat is presently dating actor-turned-politician Yash Dasgupta. They welcomed their first kid in August 2021 and named their son, Yishaan. Despite the friction between Nusrat and him, Nikhil wished Nusrat well after she gave birth to her first child, saying he wished the newborn to have a great future.

Nusrat Jahan

In May 2022, ‘Nusrat Jahan Missing’ posters were spotted all around the actor’s parliamentary constituency of Basirhat. Leaders of the TMC and the opposition began attacking each other for it. Although the posters were pulled by party members, many claim that TMC members placed them due to Nusrat’s long absence from the area. Despite the fact that she has been absent from her seat, she has been sharing images on her Instagram profile on a regular basis.

On the work front, she had played the role of Rudrani in her latest film Swastik Sanket, an action drama that was released in January 2022 alongside Priyam. While in Mastermoshai Aapni Kichu Dekhenni, which that released in April 2022, she acted opposite Yash Dasgupta. Also, her next Jai Kali Kalkattawali, alongside actor Soham Chakraborty, the shooting of which finished last year, is expected to release later this year.
