The University of Calicut was separated from the Kerala University, and the second University was established in Kerala. The University’s first Vice-Chancellor was MM Gani (1969-75). The University houses 34 departments and nine schools. National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked 54th among Universities present in India. It has 400 autonomous colleges affiliated with Calicut University, spread over Northern Kerala. Calicut University is the largest “affiliating” University in Kerala.
Calicut University Campus
The Campus is present at Tenhipalam, 24 Km away from Malappuram city. The Main Campus has the office of the Vice-Chancellor, research and teaching departments, and the administration block. The institution also has two off-Campus situated at two different locations: one is present at Wayanad, Western Ghats of the State, and the other is present at the Thrissur, which was specially built for the tribal empowerment. Self-Financing Centres are situated in different places in Kerala.

CHMK Library
It was founded in 1971. It was renamed after the former Chief Minister of Kerala, C.H. Mohammed Koya. The library has a plethora of books, around 95,000 books, 10 newspapers, and subscribes to 210 journals.

Institute of Tribal Studies and Research is situated at Chethalayam in Wayanad, founded for the empowerment and encouraging Scheduled Tribes students to go for the Higher education. - School of Drama and Fine Arts :
Situated in Aranattukara, Thrissur City, it imparts knowledge and training in theatre and Drama. The department is affiliated with the National School of Drama. It was founded in 1977 as a center for drama artists in Kerala. The institute also began offering Ph.D. courses and postgraduate courses in the Music Department in 2002.
